UTR and Paytm screenshots
Every C Pay request needs proof of UPI. The screenshot is the picture. The UTR is the number banks use to find that exact transfer. Merchants approve against both. A blurry crop or a 11-digit guess wastes everyone’s time.
What we mean by UTR
In C Pay, UTR means the 12-digit numeric reference printed on the success screen. PhonePe and Google Pay often
show it as one block of twelve digits. Paytm often prints Ref No in groups of four, for
example 6122 0358 4247. That is still twelve digits. C Pay removes spaces and stores
612203584247. Letters and extra digits are not accepted on the customer form.
We require exactly twelve digits so a random phone number or a 10-digit UPI handle cannot sneak in as a UTR. If your bank shows a longer NEFT-style string, talk to the merchant before submitting — C Pay’s customer form is built around the 12-digit UPI reference used in these live-app recharges.
How automatic reading works
After you pick a screenshot, C Pay runs text recognition in the browser. It looks for labels such as UTR, UPI
Ref, Reference No, and Paytm’s Ref No. It also looks for three groups of four digits. If it
finds twelve digits, the UTR box fills. It also tries to read a date and time such as
14 Aug, 10:08 PM. That timestamp is stored with the request when the scan works.
OCR fails when the photo is dark, cropped, or covered by another popup. It also fails if the app uses a layout we have not seen. Failure is not a ban. Type the twelve digits yourself and continue. Merchants can correct UTR later with a pencil on Transactions if you swapped two digits.
How to shoot the screenshot
Capture the full success card: amount, paid status, and the reference line. Do not screenshot the UPI pin pad. Do not send a gallery collage of three payments. One payment, one UTR, one request. If you already submitted, do not reuse that UTR on a second request.
Amount on the screenshot
C Pay does not currently block submit just because the screenshot rupees differ from the selected package. That is why merchants can edit amount and coins. As a customer, you still should pay the amount shown in large type on the C Pay page. Matching rupees is the fastest approve.
Common Paytm mistakes
Cropping the footer so Ref No is missing. Photographing the phone with another phone (glare). Sending the “processing” screen instead of success. Typing ten digits from the UPI ID. Adding a space in the middle of the twelve digits on a keyboard that then drops a digit. If OCR filled eleven digits, delete and type all twelve from the Ref No line.
Date and time on the request
When OCR reads a line like 14 Aug, 10:08 PM, C Pay can store that with the request so the
merchant’s eye matches UPI history. If the scan misses time, the screenshot still matters — merchants compare
visually. You do not need to type a clock unless the form asks.
Privacy of the image
The screenshot is a financial document. Upload it in C Pay. Do not post it to a public group with your full account numbers visible. Crop PIN pads. See Privacy and safety.
